Sean “Diddy” Combs has surrendered his Key to the City of New York following a request from Mayor Eric Adams. This action comes three weeks after a 2016 video surfaced showing Combs assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura.

On June 4, Mayor Adams sent a letter to the 54-year-old music mogul, informing him that the honor had been revoked and requesting its immediate return. The letter was sent to the offices of Combs Enterprises LLC in both New York and Los Angeles.

Deputy Mayor for Communications, Fabien Levy, confirmed to Fox News Digital that the key was returned to the city on June 10.

In the letter, which Fox News Digital obtained, Adams expressed his disturbance over the footage: “Like many people, I was deeply disturbed by recent footage of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs assaulting his then partner.” Adams condemned the actions and expressed solidarity with survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, emphasizing the city’s commitment to supporting survivors.

Adams further stated, “The Key to the City of New York is presented to individuals whose service to the public and the common good rises to the highest level of achievement, and who act as a model for fellow and future New Yorkers.” He added that after internal deliberations, the committee responsible for the key recommended its rescission, a recommendation he accepted.

Combs originally received the key in a ceremony at Times Square on September 15, 2023.

The controversy surrounding Combs intensified after CNN released a video on May 17, showing him in a violent altercation with Ventura in a Los Angeles hotel hallway. Following the release, Ventura filed a lawsuit against Combs in November, accusing him of physical and sexual abuse, though she withdrew the lawsuit after reaching a settlement the next day.

The repercussions for Combs have extended beyond the key’s revocation. Howard University, on June 7, revoked an honorary degree previously awarded to Combs, citing his actions as incompatible with the university’s values. The university’s statement declared, “Mr. Combs’ behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.”

In a May Instagram video, Combs apologized for his actions, describing his behavior as “inexcusable” and stating, “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that. I was f—ed up – I hit rock bottom – but I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video.”
