Dems Threaten Their Own People – “Do As We Say Or Else”

John Kennedy has a gift that most senators would trade their committee assignments for — the ability to say exactly what everyone’s thinking, but funnier. On Wednesday, the Louisiana senator looked at the Democratic Party’s latest standoff over DHS funding and delivered a diagnosis so sharp it should come with a co-pay.
“The game room in a mental hospital.”
That’s how he described the recent House hearing where Democrats spent their allotted time screaming at the head of ICE instead of, you know, doing their jobs. And honestly? He was being generous.
The Karen Wing Takes Charge
Kennedy coined a term that’s going to stick: “the Karen wing of the Democratic Party.” These are the members who don’t just disagree with immigration enforcement — they want to burn it down and salt the earth. Defund ICE. Hamstring Border Patrol. Turn every enforcement action into a congressional tantrum.
“The Karen wing of the Democratic Party wants to defund ICE, just like they wanted to defund the police, and we know how that vampire movie turned out,” Kennedy said on Fox’s “The Faulkner Focus.”
He’s not wrong about how the last sequel ended. Democrats rode the “defund the police” wave straight into a crime surge that sent their own voters running to the suburbs. Now they’re doing the same thing with immigration enforcement, and somehow they expect a different result. That’s not politics. That’s a reboot nobody asked for.
The Shutdown Game
The Senate is staring down another partial government shutdown — this one limited to DHS. That means FEMA, TSA, the Coast Guard, and other agencies under the Homeland Security umbrella go dark. Not ICE, though. Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” already pumped billions into immigration enforcement, so ICE keeps running regardless.
Which means the Democrats’ leverage play is to shut down airport security and disaster response to protest an agency they can’t actually defund. Let that strategy marinate for a second.
Kennedy’s read on the situation is bleak and probably accurate: even if Republicans gave Democrats everything they asked for on ICE reforms, the Karen wing would still block the budget. Because this isn’t about policy. It’s about punishment. Any Democrat who votes to keep DHS open gets targeted by their own base. The moderates — if any still exist — are hostages.
Chuck Schumer is digging in. Senate Majority Leader John Thune is trying to find a path. And the clock is ticking while Democrats hold disaster relief agencies hostage over an immigration enforcement operation they have zero ability to stop.
The ICE Problem They Created
Democrats’ stated objective is reining in ICE following the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good. Those incidents deserve serious scrutiny. Nobody’s arguing otherwise. But the Democratic response hasn’t been serious scrutiny — it’s been theatrical fury aimed at dismantling the entire enforcement apparatus.
There’s a difference between demanding accountability for specific incidents and using those incidents as a battering ram to destroy an agency. Democrats aren’t asking for reforms. They’re asking for surrender. And when you frame every ICE operation as state violence and every enforcement officer as a villain, you don’t get policy changes. You get exactly what Kennedy described — a game room in a mental hospital.
The Agitator Problem
Kennedy didn’t stop at Congress. He turned his attention to the anti-ICE protesters who’ve been showing up at enforcement operations, and his description was vintage Kennedy.
“Deeply weird.” People who give off an “I’ve got a freezer full of body parts in my basement” vibe.
Then, because Kennedy always lands the plane: “You can be deeply weird in America. You can protest. What you can’t do is protest violently… if you protest violently and act like a butthead and try to interfere with a cop, it’s not gonna end well. Even your cocker spaniel knows that.”
There’s your bumper sticker. Even your cocker spaniel knows that. Somewhere a Democratic strategist just threw their laptop across the room because they know that line is going to play on every conservative podcast for the next month and there’s nothing they can do about it.
Where This Goes
The shutdown clock is ticking. Democrats have painted themselves into a corner where their base demands they block DHS funding, their moderates know it’s political suicide, and their leadership is stuck performing for a wing of the party that won’t accept anything less than total capitulation on immigration.
Republicans, meanwhile, just need to stand there and let it happen. When voters find out that Democrats shut down airport security and FEMA because they’re mad about deportations, the ads write themselves.
Kennedy sees it clearly. “Most cops, including ICE officers, will leave you alone unless you do illegal stuff.” Simple. True. And completely lost on the people running the Democratic Party right now.
The Karen wing is in charge. And they’re about to find out that the manager they asked to speak with is the American voter.
