Abortion Fallout—Study Links Procedure To Double The Mental Health Risk

Researchers in Quebec analyzed records from more than 1.25 million women between 2006 and 2022. Their findings were clear: women who aborted were far more likely to end up in hospitals for psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and even suicide attempts than those who carried pregnancies to term.

The study tracked 28,721 women who received abortions and 1,228,807 women who gave birth. It found that abortion was “strongly associated with mental health hospitalization within five years.” The risk was highest in the first years following the abortion and only began to resemble that of mothers nearly two decades later.

Women who aborted had hospitalization rates of 104 per 10,000 per year, compared to 42 per 10,000 among women who gave birth. Suicide attempt hospitalizations hit 14.7 per 10,000 in the abortion group. Hospitalizations for substance abuse soared to 56.7 per 10,000, compared to just 15 per 10,000 among mothers. Psychiatric hospitalizations reached 85.1 per 10,000 compared to 37.1 in the birth group.

The report noted that while abortion may not be the direct cause, it appears to be a clear marker of heightened risk. “Screening for mental disorders at the time of abortion may be an opportunity to identify women who could benefit from psychological and social support,” the researchers wrote, highlighting special risks for women under 25, those with previous live births, and those with preexisting mental conditions.

Importantly, the study emphasized that women who already had children were at an even greater risk of serious mental health episodes after an abortion. This suggests that mothers who go through with the procedure carry heavier emotional and psychological burdens.

The research was backed by Canada’s Institutes of Health Research and the Quebec Health Research Fund. It also cited previous studies that found women who undergo abortions are more likely to face new psychiatric diagnoses compared to mothers.

These findings clash sharply with the narrative pushed by abortion advocates who claim the procedure is “safe” and even empowering. The data shows a very different reality—one where women who choose abortion suffer disproportionately in the years that follow.

The results are not just statistics. They represent lives forever changed. Behind every number are women who ended up in hospitals battling depression, addiction, or worse, after being told abortion would solve their problems. Families were fractured, communities were left to pick up the pieces, and children were lost before birth.

This study affirms what pro-life leaders have long warned: abortion does not just take a child’s life, it often wounds the mother as well. The supposed “choice” comes with consequences that abortion advocates refuse to admit.

For conservatives, the message is clear. Protecting life protects women, too. The abortion industry has hidden the mental health toll for decades, but evidence is now breaking through. The culture of death sold by the left is leaving scars that last for decades.

Americans must demand better than false promises and denial. The pro-life movement stands for truth—and this study proves that choosing life is not only the moral path but also the healthier one for mothers. President Trump and conservatives have always fought to defend life. This research shows that fight is also about defending women from the pain and trauma abortion brings.
