CNN’s Warns Schumer—Says He Should Be “Freaking Out”

CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten issued a blunt warning to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday: panic mode has officially arrived.
During a segment on CNN News Central, Enten walked viewers through a staggering collapse in Schumer’s approval ratings among Democrats in his own backyard of New York. According to Enten, Schumer’s favorability has fallen from 73% in December 2024 to just 52% today — the lowest number on record from Siena College polling.
“I never thought I’d see the day,” Enten said. “Sirens should be going off.”
Adding to the alarm: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is now polling higher among New York Democrats than Schumer, with a Data for Progress poll showing 55% of Democrats backing AOC over Schumer in a hypothetical 2028 Senate primary matchup. Only 36% said they would stick with Schumer.
It’s not just about popularity either. Enten pointed out that even when Democrats were asked if Schumer should remain Senate leader, the results were abysmal: just 50% said yes, while 48% said no.
“That screams primary challenge,” Enten declared.
The bad news for Schumer comes after he infuriated progressives by supporting a GOP-led spending bill earlier this year to avoid a government shutdown. Left-wing activists viewed the move as a betrayal, and Schumer has struggled to regain the trust of his party’s increasingly radical base ever since.
Former Clinton pollster Mark Penn recently warned that an AOC challenge against Schumer would be catastrophic for Democrats. With the party’s favorability already hovering near historic lows at 29%, Penn said such a fight would fracture the coalition and “put Democrats into the wilderness” for years.
Meanwhile, Schumer is projecting confidence. He told Semafor this week he believes Democrats will retake the Senate majority in 2026, claiming President Trump’s rising popularity will eventually collapse. But even longtime allies admit privately that Schumer is facing his toughest political test in decades — and may not survive it.
With AOC continuing to flirt with a Senate run and the left growing restless, Schumer’s grip on power looks shakier than ever. For now, the party’s civil war is just simmering — but the 2028 race could soon bring it to a full boil.
