Audit: Pentagon Not Sure if It’s Funding Dangerous Gain-of-Function Research in China

The Pentagon has been warned for years that China is operating an illegal biological weapons program. Unfortunately for the American people, our military can’t figure out if it’s still sending our tax dollars to China to pay for gain-of-function research on dangerous pathogens. That’s according to the Pentagon’s main watchdog, which is trying to sound the alarm with Congress.

According to the Pentagon’s inspector general, the Department of Defense (DoD) has not kept track of funding well enough to know whether it has been paying for Chinese research labs or dangerous gain-of-function experiments. Gain-of-function refers to altering a pathogen to make it more transmissible between humans and more dangerous.

Now that even the FBI believes that China altered a coronavirus through gain-of-function to create COVID-19 in a Level 4 bioweapons laboratory in Wuhan, China, Congress has called for greater transparency on how federal agencies are spending money overseas. Two years ago, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) told Congress that defense officials had no clue how taxpayer money sent to Chinese research labs was being used. That was what sparked this new investigation and report from the Pentagon’s inspector general.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) has been leading the charge to force the DoD to account for how it’s spending money on research in China. She also hopes to ban the DoD from paying for research to make viruses and bacteria more contagious or lethal. Ernst successfully added a provision to last year’s National Defense Authorization Act which required this latest inspector general report.

“As more evidence emerges that our own tax dollars are advancing the interests of our adversaries, it’s clear we need greater transparency and accountability of how, why, and especially where our money is going,” said Ernst.

The leaders at the DoD, who haven’t been able to win a war in decades, have become so weak and lackadaisical that they’re sending our tax dollars to one of America’s biggest adversaries—and not even bothering to check and see what the money is being spent on. The generals in Beijing must be laughing at us.

Not that the Pentagon and the DoD are the only federal agencies doing this. We know from Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was also sending money to foreign countries to hunt down dangerous pathogens and make them even more dangerous. Dr. Tony Fauci was a central figure in paying for the development of COVID-19 in a lab in Wuhan.

The GAO report from 2022 showed that loose tracking of federal funds was even worse than anyone could have imagined. Federal agencies can’t even account for how much money they’ve sent to China for biological research. The Pentagon claims it did not knowingly participate in gain-of-function research or pay for it, but they have no way to prove that assertion because reporting requirements are so lax.

The COVID-19 pandemic was used to destroy the booming US economy that President Trump had successfully developed. Millions of Americans were financially crushed during the pandemic lockdowns. Suicide rates soared among children as they were kept out of school for a year. All these things happened because the Pentagon and Tony Fauci at the NIH funded gain-of-function research in the Wuhan lab. This all seems crystal clear now.

The question now is, why is it taking Congress so long to prevent the DoD and other federal agencies from doing this again? They already wrecked the country once. Most Americans would appreciate it if our tax dollars didn’t pay for any more barnyard flu illnesses to escape from China.
