File this one under “not exactly surprising.” New polling from Fox News shows that a huge majority of Americans believe that business owners should be criminally prosecuted for hiring illegal aliens. The poll conducted between December 10 and December 13 found that 64% of Americans believe that business owners should be penalized and fined for giving jobs to illegal aliens that should have gone to American workers.
Only 32% are opposed to penalizing business owners, and 4% are undecided. In a related question, 61% of swing voters and 64% of moderates say they support mandatory national E-Verify, a system in which it would be nearly impossible for an illegal alien to take an American job.
Joe Biden’s open border policies have now turned blue-run cities like Chicago and New York into dystopian hellholes. As a result, even 53% of Democrats now support imposing penalties on employers for hiring illegal alien scabs.
Despite the fact that it is completely illegal to hire an illegal alien, very few employers are ever punished for it by the federal government. Lax enforcement of the laws does nothing but incentivize more illegal immigration and gives employers another reason to hire them, which ultimately suppresses the wages of the American middle class and poor.
In September, two Republican Senators proposed a mandatory nationwide E-Verify bill. The legislation would also gradually raise the federal minimum wage to $11 an hour by 2028. Despite the enduring popularity of E-Verify with the voters, Congress has repeatedly failed to get a bill passed for several years now.
“Ending the black market for illegal labor will open up jobs for Americans,” says Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK). “Raising the minimum wage will allow Americans filling those jobs to better support their families.”
